1) Before we loosen the belt on this roundtable, what is your favorite item featured in this month’s Martin box?
Joseph Villarosa (Customer Experience Specialist): My favorite item would have to be the travel-sized toothpaste from Quip. As simple as it seems, I love the way their formula works with my toothbrush and I’m actually going to be signing up for their subscription soon, as their concept is awesome. It also came in handy during my recent winery weekend trip with my best friends!
Mike Luca (Blog Manager): For real, the Quip toothpaste feels good on my teeth and it’s one less little thing to worry about for my murse.
2) Which fashion staple or trend are you making a point to include in your ensemble this Thanksgiving weekend, and what tips do you have for others in turn?
JV: My style staple for Thanksgiving is always a warm sweater. Although it can get warm inside my house with the ovens on and all of my family around, this Thanksgiving is sure to be a cold one in NYC. I love chunky knit cardigans especially. Paired with a nice solid gray shirt and dark denim, I’ll make sure to look my best on what is arguably my favorite holiday.
ML: Aside from the fact that No-Shave November is STILL going strong, highlighting maroon or burgundy underneath my cardigan is my favorite combo to exploit this time of year. Stay sleek and toasty while pairing with reddish Vans, with that extra change of clothes and sneakers for football mid-afternoon.
3) Whether on your daily work commute or through that well-deserved PTO to insert-tropics-here, what is your primary tool for guaranteeing as smooth of a travel experience as humanly possible?
JV: I don’t know about you, but traveling is damn near impossible without some audio entertainment. When commuting or traveling around during the weekends and holidays, I’ll always have a new playlist ready to go on my Spotify app. Christmas carols, anyone? If not, I’m listening to a queue of my favorite podcasts. I find most podcasts to be super entertaining and since they are often quite lengthy, they make the commute or travel time pass right by before I even know it.
ML: When flying, stuff a smaller bag into your larger carry-on and fret over reorganizing your belongings after security, based on likelihood of actual plane usage. Have your podcasts pre-queued for less smartphone fidgeting the day of. Avoid skinny jeans, and don’t pack a camera battery that will evacuate the entire terminal.
4) Any quirky dish or cocktail that one would only find at your Thanksgiving table?
JV: One of the quirkiest dishes – if not the quirkiest – at my table during Thanksgiving is with our early afternoon appetizers. Every year I buy a bag of Trader Joe’s Turkey & Stuffing flavored potato chips and a jar of their cranberry sauce for dipping. As strange as it sounds, it’s one of the best snack combinations I’ve ever tried and is always a hit with the fam. You just have to try it!
ML: When I have the time and capacity, I make a cranberry salad dressing from scratch. I’ve also inherited ham-and-spinach quiche responsibilities for 2017. I’m giving everyone their coveted fat and dairy but I’m sneaking in a gluten-free pie crust so shush.
5) You find yourself willfully or begrudgingly at the Detroit Lions tailgate on Thursday morning. Are you jumping into the portable hot springs of the Tubgaters, or do you have other suggested means for staying warm in this finally colder weather?
JV: I don’t know if I’d go that far, but I love to layer up during this time of year with sweaters and warm coats when it comes to clothing and style. A nice hot cup of coffee or tea in my gloved hands will also do as things get ridiculously cold. Brr…
ML: I will be in that hot tub, even if it’s filled with tears and gravy.
6) Aside from good health and loved ones, what are you thankful for this year?
JV: I am thankful for having the opportunity to work for a growing startup in New York City. Every day I am learning more about this amazing city, and with a little help from my amazing colleagues I’m getting to explore all that it has to offer. So many people dream of being able to work in this city, and I’m so fortunate to be able to do so with such a wonderful team that encourages me to grow and succeed.
ML: I am thankful for a fresh tie-sock-pin repertoire, for co-workers that appreciate my complicated chai orders, for the New York Giants’ oncoming high draft pick and the sangria comatose to accompany it.
