Welcome to our new and improved Happy Hour! Once a month our team will be breaking out the muddlers, jiggers and shakers to concoct for you the next pertinent cocktail inspiration for that upcoming party or outing. New Year’s resolutions come and go, but liquor stores open daily, so pending the refinements of your current diets and mental mantras, let’s make sure January’s reward doesn’t go too long overdue.
Of course, since yours truly is contently empowered directly in the middle of his Whole 30 regimen, there will be no official taste test today – particularly due to the gastritis-inducing citrus and carbonation of this edition’s chosen sparkling beverage…
That’s right, we are toasting early and often with bubbly in the form of Mimosa – the 5 P.M. mascot of Boozy Brunch! Though there should be no societal limitation to strictly Sunday mornings in the Upper East Side, celebratory commemorations and solo tropical getaways when Kristen Bell leaves you for Russell Brand, champagne is typically best enjoyed bottomless and with equal parts chilled orange juice.
Mimosas are another universally accessible gift from Europe to the classy and dapper businesspeople that fly in preferential fashion, stay at opportune hotels and wrestle with composure at Las Vegas conventions. Book that conference in Spain to rename your Tropicana cocktail the Agua de Valencia, double the quantity of sparkling wine for a Buck’s Fizz, or add a splash of vodka for your next courageously suave move with the Flirtini. If anything, man it up with a shot of Fireball.
Regardless, make sure your aerated blush is accompanied by enough eggs and pasta carbonara and other breakfast-lunch specialty foods.
So…it’s winter. What if the cold weather is preventing you from painting the town at the expense of home’s cozy confines on weekends, or distilling your thirst for such seemingly summery sensations? Italy’s Bellini offers a similar problem with its specific peach flare, while the Poinsettia’s cranberry alternative still bursts and boasts as more of a Thanksgiving or Christmas family-time crutch. What’s a bottle of Korbel Brut to do without fulfilling its satisfactory peel-off followed by a raving round of dodge-cork?
Simply warm up your flute with the deeper tones of wintery fruits. Enhance both your palette and reputation as a mixology mogul with these three January mimosa interpretations:
1. Pear Mimosa
Sweet in ripeness and crisply texturous, Asian pears remain a mainstay this far into the season. The ideal ratio is 3/4 cup champagne for every 1/2 cup serving of pear nectar. Feel free to accentuate with lime, reminisce with a festive addition of cinnamon or vanilla, pair that pear with the lush juxtaposition of passionfruit juice, or even saturate leftover slices in the mix themselves a la sangria.
2. Pomegranate Mimosa
For the heightened sake of health, this superfood flavor can be as comfortably inviting as cranberry, if you still choose to cut the tartness with a hint of orange Cointreu. Whether with Prosecco or Cava, make use of both the pomegranate’s juice AND seeds for a sumptuous and nutritionally advantageous experience.
3. Blood Orange Mimosa
Here’s your figurative death-in-the-early-afternoon compromise if there is one. Akin to grapefruit, this is the most aesthetically pleasing of the three options with that sultry winter boldness to match. Combine your rose champagne with the refreshingly fresh liquefaction of squeezed blood oranges (three should suffice). If you’re craving that extra boost, enter champagne’s confidante St-Germain, for the elder flower in all of us 21-plusses.
Now that you are finely buzzed and amped to take on the White Walkers (or I suppose the lack thereof until next year…those lavish Lannisters), let us know YOUR tried and true mimosa tips and endorsed juice flavors in the comments below! What are your go-to boozy brunch spots? Is there a better way you enjoy the art of champagne?
We’ll be sure to prep the bar for more provisional cocktail seminars coming up soon, but in the meanwhile our glasses are raised to drinking and winning the new year. Mix-It Mike will keep your tab open 😉
