Spirits are in the air with a multitude of reasons to feel flushed this February. Whether there is a certain someone to cherishingly clink cups with by dinner light, or the vivacity of life simply struck you, allow us to carry over the elegance of Mimosa January with a cocktail destined to treat both him and her! One may very well end up waking with a Sprezza surprise come the following morning, but we’ll tend to that garnish later on.
The obvious occasion bookmarked in Happy Hour’s menu is Valentine’s Day, but many dapper gentlemen best be wary of first over-satiating themselves on its Eve this year. Yes, it’s 2018’s first significantly excusable, celebratory time to shrive ourselves of buried cultural significance, when on Fat Tuesday we will stroll down Bourbon Street with a classic liquid symbol in craw: The Old Fashioned.
Amidst its relative bar staple Whiskey Sour, localized brother Manhattan and street-savoir-faire adversary Boulevardier, stands one of the founding fathers of mixology dubbed The Old Fashioned. This drink also spun off as the Sazerac mashes sugar with bitters and accentuates your preference of bourbon or whiskey (or even brandy) with a citrusy finishing touch. While this timeless entity withstood its travels from Louisville to Astoria, you can take solace in forgoing Mardi Gras’ carnivalesque Who Dat milk punches and observe the parades from your New Orleans man cave with a Mad Men Netflix binge on the rocks.
This is not to say that any woman would fare worse from this acquired taste than, say, yours truly. Rather, modernize your palette with an all-time aphrodisiac and transform this stretch of weeknights into a masquerade of romance with your strong-willed and deserving partner. That’s right – courtesy of V-Day we are flavoring this month’s Old Fashioned with CHOCOLATE!
Hopefully we at the office can mix things up during our festivities next week, but for now here are our best tips towards fusing together these two February holiday tropes at your in-home bar.
The most seamless means of integrating your cocoa is to have it serve as the sugar itself, akin to this Black Onyx variety referenced by Savory Spice. If you are without a muddler, then any flat-surfaced wooden kitchen tool will do as you grind the sweet seductive powder with coupled splashes of Angostura. Otherwise, experiment by substituting your conventional rye whiskey with something like Prichard’s chocolate bourbon, or just adding that extra shot of Godiva liqueur 😉
Jim Beam is my personal bourbon-whiskey of discretion, and I can imagine either its Honey or Red Stag (black cherry) offspring pairing with your eventual orange squeeze superbly. The ratio is two ounces alcohol to a half oz. juice as everything is stirred together in a pre-chilled highball glass.
Your fruit-based ornamentation or small-plate counterpart is key, so further elevate the game for your date by baking a batch of berry-of-choice scones. Better yet, illuminate the hipster mentality with a positive connotation and “chili” your chocolate cocktail, permitting a savory Cajun meal (…okay, JD mac-and-cheese and pommes frites) to accompany an otherwise dessert affair.
As contemporary as these approaches may appear, the essence of purebred Old Fashioned fun is preserved and rekindled by the new flame’s breath. Keep the tab open by expressing in the comments section the successes or failures of your bourbon recipe trials, or how you alternatively celebrate this selected spirit throughout the Mardi-Valentine hysteria of February. If you do…
